Washington, DC

For students who have completed
9-12th grades as of June 2010

Washington D.C. is home to some of the America’s most prominent political and historical buildings. The centers of all three branches of the federal government are located in the District, and many of the nation's most recognizable monuments and museums are also located there. But if one looks just beyond the government buildings and tourist attractions, the city is struggling with the devastating effects of poverty, substance abuse, and crime. Seldom seen by tourists, a lack of medical care, prevalent illiteracy, and an overwhelming rise in single parent homes has plagued the District. But all hope is not lost in this diverse community. Once known as the murder capital of the United States, many D.C. neighborhoods are becoming safe and vibrant areas due to the effects of middle-class families moving in. Several community development initiatives are also underway to help families find employment and affordable housing, as well as lend support to the large number of children living in poverty.

Our team will have the opportunity to come alongside local ministries, Daybreak (www.daybreakkids.org) to help continue the upward momentum in revitalizing the D.C. community. Outreach will center on building relationships and sharing Christ’s love with needy inner-city children. In addition to the children’s ministry we may also have the chance to partner with a new church plant for neighborhood outreach. There is also a potential for senior’s ministry at a local retirement home as well as an opportunity to help clean out and refurbish some of the local projects. There is a critical need in this community as there are many who are unreached with the Gospel and who need to be shown the love of Christ.

Our team will join First Nations Ministries in building relationships with youth and their families through discipleship groups, Bible studies, and Sunday school classes and by providing for physical needs such as groceries and home repair.

We will work right alongside Duane, Susie, and Jamie as they disciple their youth group teens and their families through youth events and
services, dinners, game nights, video game times in the youth center, and by just hanging out sharing lives. Celebrating with new Apache friends, we will end the week with a fun outing. We might go fishing or swimming, or host a pizza party or game night. Ministry takes place in the afternoon and evening on the Rez. Mornings are reserved for daily orientation, worship, personal devotion time, and chores.

*This trip will require each participant to send 20 prayer/financial support letters. You will be coached in putting this letter together by the trip leadership.
