Dance Participation Waiver

What We Believe

The worship dance ministry team is made up of those with a passion for and proficiency at interpretive dance and movement. The goal of this ministry is to enhance and display, through movement, the act of worship. Used with music in an interpretive form, dance is a means of expressing praise and worship to God individually and corporately. We also believe that the training of our youth and children in these expressions are worthy endeavors for their spiritual formation.

Placement Evaluations

All dancers, returning and new, are strongly encouraged to attend the Worship Dance Workshop to learn a new routine. The first day of practice, all dancers will be evaluated as they dance the workshop routine. They will subsequently be placed in the appropriate class. Age and skill will be taken into consideration.

Attendance

Each dance class will take part in leading Sunday morning worship at least twice a year. Dancers are allowed to miss up to 2 practices per dance routine, missing a maximum of 5 practices per year. If more than 2 practices per routine are missed, the dancer will be asked to sit out for that particular dance. All dress rehearsals, which will usually be the Thursday prior to performing, are mandatory.

Dance performance dates will be given to dancers the first day of dance class.  Dancers and parents will need to review the dates to see if the dancer is available to attend the dance performance day, dress rehearsal, and most practices (not missing more than 2 practices). If a dancer is already aware that she has a conflict for both scheduled routines, she will be asked to forfeit her spot with the dance ministry for this particular year.  This will allow others who may be on a waiting list to participate.

Discipline

Dancers are expected to give instructors full attention during time of instruction, prayer, devotion, etc.  Dancers who are a disruption will first have a conversation with the instructor – the instructor will inform the dancer of wrongdoing and explain what is acceptable.  After the second offense or disruption, the dancer will have a conversation with the dance instructor and dance coordinator.  After the third time, the dancer, instructor, dance coordinator, and a parent will meet to discuss if continuing in Worship Dance is in the best interest of this particular dancer and the ministry.

Modest Attire

We want to keep our dancers in modest clothing. While we understand that stretch and form fitting attire is the norm for dance rehearsals, keep in mind our reason for dancing: to show honor and glory to our King.  Remember modest attire when attending all rehearsals. Please DO NOT wear mini shorts, spandex shorts, spaghetti straps, sleeveless leotards, or anything that would show the midriff. Also, if a leotard is worn, please cover up the bottom half with a skirt or shorts. Thank you for your cooperation.

Team Rehearsals

Worship Dance Ministry Team Rehearsals begin Thursday, September 11, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. in the Children's Wing, in Rooms 122, 108, 109/116.

Each practice will begin with a Bible verse, devotional, and prayer. Dancers will be taught the importance of worship along with dance technique. Routines will be performed throughout the year during worship services on Sunday mornings. The dance rehearsals are free of charge; however, each dancer will be responsible for purchasing an outfit and jazz shoes. Scholarships are available.

Dance is for students in 3rd-12th grades, male and female. They will participate in three teams:

  • Elementary team
  • Middle school team
  • High school team
